The story of Giacomo Casanova and Teran

The native Istrian variety, Teran, is a rich red wine of passionate flavor with the scent of raspberries prevailing in its aroma. The first mention of Teran wine dates back to the fourteenth century when it was served in ceramic jars to royal diplomats. Teran is a wine with character, strength, persistence, and slightly higher acidity. Typically the wine of Istrian farmworkers and domestic households, it also found its way to the tables of nobility.
The passionate flavor of Teran intoxicated the world-famous adventurer, soldier, spy, and lover Giacomo Casanova, whose last name became a synonym for a passionate adventurous lover. In his lengthy memoir History of my Life, he mentions Istria on two occasions. Casanova visited Vrsar, a small town in the vicinity of the Lim Bay twice and was introduced to a favorite local drink - Teran. Despite his short stay in Vrsar, he managed, intoxicated by Teran, to accomplish one of his romantic adventures. Today, locals of Vrsar often refer to Teran as the wine that will awaken passion and enrich every dish.

Kozlović winery, one of the best know and most valued wineries of Istria, produces its own Teran, of deeper almost opaque purple color. Today, the winery is supervised and run by its fourth generation which has led them to have the most modern cellar in Istria with a total surface of 2200 m2. The winery is built in a sustainable way using gravity racks and plants on both the roof and the walls aiming to respect the inclusion of the building into the landscape.
